Door Hardware - An Overview Of Door Hardware In The 21 Century

The façade of your house is your image to the rest of the world. From the color of the paint to your style of siding, how your lawn is kept or the door hardware you use. When someone comes to the door they can be greeted by a myriad of entry possibilities.

Be it your exterior door hardware or your interior it counts toward style points with your guests and shows your taste and what kind of person you are. From pocket door hardware and sliding door hardware to garage door hardware. The one key exception is in regards to pocket door hardware.

Pocket door hardware is functional and has no bearing on physical appearance. The pocket door hardware includes rails of metal or plastic with rollers or casters that allows the door to glide into and out of an extended wall on either side to seal off a room. The pocket door hardware can be cheap or expensive. The expensive side allows your doors to remain steady and glide shut easily whereas the cheaper will have you seeing your door sag and be tougher to pull shut.

The inlay handles are the one part of pocket door hardware that is decorative. You can get them in silver, gold and plastic. The metal pocket door hardware is able to be etched or engraved which is recommended if you want some style.

Sliding door hardware is slightly less hard to get hold of than that of pocket doors. Their located near the back of the house, leading out to the pool or the deck. The sliding door hardware is primarily a sturdy plastic but it doesn’t have to be. It can be replaced with metal of aluminum or you can go high hog and get silver or gold.

Does the sliding door hardware keep the door snug to frame or away from it? Does it hang, suspended or firmly attached? Does the sliding door hardware allow your door to glide softly or squeak in pain when you close it? Choose sliding door hardware based on these thoughts as well as money you wish to spend.

Garage door hardware is often times overlooked, but depending on your style of house it’s one of the first things people see when coming to visit. Besides the usual garage door hardware we have to have such as a motor, metal beams and the sort. They’re useful to shop for when you need your door to close smoothly but the look doesn’t matter as long as it functions.

The exterior garage door hardware, like the sliding door or pocket door is overlooked. Choosing from handles of aluminum, gold or silver or simple twist knobs to turn and pull open the door also in the styled metals.

The real style points come from the exterior door hardware. Choosing from gold or silver, from knobs to push unlocks. The choices are varied and can sometimes be hard to decide on. Besides the regular door hardware you can select to have knockers affixed along with your door knobs for added flare. This door hardware is not only fun but classical. The lion’s head is a popular favorite but your regular etched door hardware as a knocker will work just as well and be eye-catching.

The Ancient Art Of Feng Shui Interior Design

A room can be transformed and energized in a positive way with the use of feng shui, so when we enter the room we are affected both visually and emotionally. The Chinese have been practicing the ancient art of feng shui interior design for centuries.

You should always try to interior design the rooms of your house with a focus on the individual mood you are trying to create in each one. It will help you with this task by using color, furniture placement, and perhaps a different carpet and drapes to achieve the desired effect.

How does it work?

Chi, is the hidden energy of a place, person, or object, this energy is very important in the practice of this art. This flow of Chi or energy is unique to every home and place, the practitioner will check this energy and help it to flow freely, if required.

This ancient art taps into the hidden energies of inanimate objects by using the five elements and ying and yang. By using these elements in a practitioner can bring about harmony and balance in the rooms of the house, this will lead to a relaxing and prosperous environment.

The elements in this Chinese art are wood, water, metal, earth and fire. When correctly used Chinese feng shui will bring about balance, harmony, and prosperity into the household.

When starting a new project in feng shui interior design it would be a good idea to make some notes about what colors to use in each room. You should then make a plan of what furniture to use and where you are going to place it. A feature like a water fountain may be required in some rooms.

Feng shui is now very popular in the US and the world at large, because of this there are many books available on the market that will help you understand this ancient Chinese art, and give you tips on how to use it in your office and home. You can also get information from websites on the Internet that will help you understand and show you how to apply it in your environment.

By studying feng shui interior design an individual may come to realize that everything is interconnected in the environment, and that we can affect the atmosphere and energy of a room in both a negative and positive way by where we place the furniture or the color we paint the walls, doors, and windows.

Doorknobs - It Is A Good Thing They Were Invented

Have you ever thought what it would be like without doorknobs? Like, how would your door stay shut? Or, what about privacy? You wouldn't have any because you wouldn't be able to lock your door? So, you might take them for granted, but in actuality, they are pretty important little fixtures.

Really, without doorknobs, opening and shutting doors would be pretty difficult, and it's a good thing that they were invented by a man named O. Dorsey back in the late 1800's.

One thing about doorknobs that you might not know is that there are actually different types and serve different purposes. For example, if you're looking for one to be put on your front door, then you want to go with an entryway doorknob. The reason being is that this version of this fixture has a cylindrical locking device that can be locked and opened with a key. Now, if you need one for your bedroom, then one of the privacy variety would be the way to go because it can also be locked, but does not require a key. The two other types available include passageway ones that do not lock, which can be used on a closet or hallway door, and dummy ones that are just there for show.

Along with the different types, doorknobs also come in a wide variety of styles, which is great for you because then you can easily find just the right ones to match the present décor of your space. For instance, you can get ones that are very sleek and modern looking, others that have an antique vibe to them, and ones that are also plainer and are on the traditional side. There are even ones that are on the colonial side and others that combine styles.

The reason why there are so many styles when it comes to doorknobs is because they are made out of a wide variety of materials. Like, the ones that have a modern feel would probably be made out of metal and would feature like a brushed stainless steel finish. Or, the ones that are antique would also be made out of metal, but would feature like a distressed finish. They could even be made from crystal or glass too.

A great way to check out all the doorknobs that you could purchase for your space is by going online and doing some shopping. Breezing through all the different sites is a synch and normally when you come across something you like, it will be at the best prices possible. Your selections will even be shipped right to your door, which is pretty convenient because you don't even have to leave your home to do it.

When it comes down to it, doorknobs are fixtures that are pretty important because without them, a lot of other things, like locking doors, would be pretty hard to do. So, don't take them for granted anymore and if you are thinking about purchasing some new ones for your home, remember to do your shopping online.

Antique Door Knobs - Unique Antique Collections

There are people who collect all sorts of thing. From dolls to bottle caps, there is a collection for nearly every personality. Some people even get all worked up over the old knobs on doors, and have started collections out of antique door knobs. We're not sure how this collection happened. Maybe is started when an old door was going to be thrown out and there was a nostalgic moment, and the knob was kept as a memory. Then that knob called out for more knobs, and a collecting frenzy was underway.

No matter the reason for them, antique door knob collections are very popular, and can be very expensive. Some antique door knob collectors are very serious about their trade. They know all there is to know about antique door knobs. If you think a door knob is a door knob, you're dead wrong.

In the last century antique door knobs have gone through a number of personality and design changes.
Instead of just being something used to open and close a door, door knobs back then were just as much a part of the house as the rest of the décor, and were expected to make a statement. For a while the job was relegated mostly to glass artists who created beautiful bubble glass knobs, lead crystal cut into jewel-like shapes, as well as amazing pieces of brass that were carved into extremely ornate patterns.

As time went on, styles of knobs came and went, and it was only in more modern times that the door knobs we used seemed to become a bit more boring, and just looked at as things that are meant to open a door.

It's possible the boring state of today's door knobs is what caused many hardware manufacturers to go back in time and start lines of pieces that are reproductions of those fascinating antique door knobs. Those reproductions have become a major income for those companies as people continually look for new ways to dress up their home.

But the real money seems to be in the door knobs that were really from that time. Just as much as the other collectibles and antiques in old estates can get a pretty penny at auction, the antique door knobs in those homes are also commanding top dollar at estate sales and auctions.

Here's a little interesting antique door knob history:
During World War II, many people pulled the brass doorknobs from their homes to help the government in their collections of brass to make war goods. Having one of these brass goodies today can fetch a pretty penny at an auction.

How much would you pay for antique door knobs? How about $8,300 for just one knob? That's the price that the 'Doggie knob' fetched at an auction. The beautifully carved bronze knob with a pooch looking through the center was created in the late 1800s. There are believed to be only two of them in existence.
