Garage Doors - Both Architectural Accents and High-Tech Appliances

Garage Doors As Home Accents

You may be amazed to know that the rising demand for visibly appealing garage doors has caused the price of garage to rise faster than the price of any other home feature, interior or exterior, on a per-square-foot basis. Even home architects are now relying on the suppliers and installers of garage doors to advise them in choosing the best garage door designs for their specific home construction plans.

Side-hinged garage doors, for example, are now available to recapture the carriage house doors of yesteryear for homeowners who are determined to maintain the period character of their residences. These doors are crafted of the finest woods and can be custom painted or stained to complement a home's colors. Side-hinged garage doors can be center or off center-set, depending on the homeowner's needs.

The tree other styles of garage doors are the sectional, rolling, and over-the-top garage doors, with the over-the-top style being the most popular. Any of these types of garage doors can be constructed of wood, steel, or glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and can be constructed with a variety of different panels and even with windows if desired. The possible variations in garage doors, in fact, are so numerous that you can easily have one customized to add a unique accent to your home.

Garage Doors As Home Appliances

You may never have thought of a garage door as another home appliance, but state-of-the-art garage doors are exactly that. With automatic openers, they offer as much time and energy-saving convenience as any other home appliance, and they also function as parts of home security systems.

Like any other home appliances, then, garage doors require regular maintenance to keep them operating as they were designed to. You can go a long way in saving yourself maintenance time and repair cost by purchasing one of the Garage doors advertised as low-maintenance, but in any event you should make a point of inspecting your garage door at least once a year, and lubricate it as often as necessary to keep it operating smoothly.

If you have an attached garage with an automatic garage door opener, your garage door is likely to be the most-used home entry and exit. So it's especially important for you to have your garage door serviced whenever the first signs of trouble develop. If you do, you can expect as much as thirty years of reliable operation from you garage door.

Who Else Wants Privacy And Light Control At Your Sliding Glass Door But Hate Verticals?

When I first started in the window treatment business thirty years ago almost every one had wall to wall, floor to ceiling drapes on their windows and doorways. This meant that they were snug-as-a-bug in their rooms closed off from everyone and couldn't see out.

About this time the vertical blind started to be popular. People replaced those dungeon producing drapes with verticals that went inside the window or door frame and instantly the room was transposed into this huge space that people didn't know they had. The rooms looked so much bigger and for the first time they could see out the window or door. The cold war was over, they could see their neighbor and neighborhood.

That's when the trouble began. Vertical blinds became so popular that a number of people started to make vertical and vertical components that didn't know or much less care that they didn't know what they were doing. They just wanted to make some fast money.

Vendors rushed to market with vertical vane material that never should of been used for vertical vanes. They frayed, they hung crooked, they were not able to be cleaned, they faded fast and some of them were just plain terrible.

To make matters worse they were loading every thing into van's and went from town to town selling this junk. In a couple of months time the verticals stoped working and these vendors were in some other city or neighborhood and -of course - couldn't be found.

Because of this people took there anger and vengeance out on the vertical blind. Unfortunately people started saying "I hate vertical blinds" when what they really meant was they hated the cheap bargain vertical they got stuck with.

Today all this has changed. The national companies selling and Steel Doors manufacturing verticals today are great honest companies selling quality verticals and vertical components and backing them up with good reasonable guarantees.

Today if a vertical gives you a problem, the manufacturer will replace or repair no questions asked as long as it's in the guarantee period.

Even after the guarantee has past they will still repair the product or provide parts for a small fee.

There is even a place on the internet where you can get parts for just about every window blind made.

The bottom line is that if you want privacy and light control at your sliding glass door then reconsider the vertical blinds. Nothing will give you the good looks and great service that a vertical will.

There is no time like the present to forgive the vertical blind. Forgive and move on to great looks and quality vertical blinds.

You see no matter how much you say you hate verticals, they are the only, and I do mean only window treatment that will allow you to have both light control and privacy at a sliding glass door.

Drapes give you privacy but you can't see out. Horizontal blinds are not practical unless you have a 96" high opening and then they are a pain to open and close if you use the door at all.

There is nothing that works like a vertical or vertical shadings to give you that feeling of openness and light control while providing privacy at the same time.

Quality is definitely in the verticals of today. The products offered today have been tested by time and countless thousands of children and pets all across the country. They are built tough to take the wear and tear of everyday life.

Painting the Front Door Will Help You Sell Your Home

Your front door can make or break a sale. Would-be buyers will drive past a home that has a dingy front door. On the other hand, an attractive front door will lure would-be buyers inside. But as I discovered, choosing a paint color for the front door can be difficult.

I am putting my deceased daughter's home up for sale next month. China doors The siding is tan and the trim, shutters, and front door are white. Unfortunately, the door does not look fresh any more, thanks to hand prints and paw prints. Painting the door is at the top of my To Do list. Michelle Dawson tells why fresh paint is crucial to a sale in her article, "Want to Sell Quickly? Think Paint," published on the Wells Fargo Web site.

"If nothing else, paint at least the door, door frame, and foyer or first room the would-be buyers will see," she advises. I followed this advice and hired a painter to freshen up the interior walls.

Most homes have at least three paint colors, according to Jackie Craven, author of "Picking House Colors," which is on the architecture.about.com Web site. One color us used for the siding, a second for the eaves and trim, and a third to accent the architecture. "A well-chosen selection of contrasting trim and accent colors can draw attention to architectural details and disguise design flaws," she writes.

Thankfully, I have no design flaws to disguise. However, I have to deal with the fact that the house is on a curve, and the the first thing would-be buyers see is the garage -- not too exciting. A bright front door would make would-be buyers notice the house. "What color should I choose?" I asked the painter.

"I've painted doors red, orange, and even purple," he replied. "You need something more neutral." Though we considered brown, the color was too neutral. After holding various paint chips against the siding, we chose a medium green that goes with grass and flowering plants. The choice also suits the neighborhood, something else to consider.

Paint colors vary from region to region, according to Al Heavens, author of "Right Paint Choices are Key to Resale," published on the Reality Times Web site. He thinks "a spanking-new paint job that's crisp and fresh can really reel them[would-be buyers] in no matter where you live."

A gardener is going to plant flowers alongside the garage to give the house more curb appeal The flowers will lead would-be buyers to the front door and colorful porch planters. "How to Add Interest to a Front Door," published on www.About.com, contains other tips for sellers, including washing the windows, watering plants [and a lawn] regularly, and adding a seasonal flag.

I am doing all I can to sell the house. Hopefully, these changes will get would-be buyers' attention, lure them inside, and make them want to live there. If you are selling your home think about painting the front door a happy, welcoming color. A little paint can lead to lots of offers.

Door Hardware - An Overview Of Door Hardware In The 21 Century

The façade of your house is your image to the rest of the world. From the color of the paint to your style of siding, how your lawn is kept or the door hardware you use. When someone comes to the door they can be greeted by a myriad of entry possibilities.

Be it your exterior door hardware or your interior it counts toward style points with your guests and shows your taste and what kind of person you are. From pocket door hardware and sliding door hardware to garage door hardware. The one key exception is in regards to pocket door hardware.

Pocket door hardware is functional and has no bearing on physical appearance. The pocket door hardware includes rails of metal or plastic with rollers or casters that allows the door to glide into and out of an extended wall on either side to seal off a room. The pocket door hardware can be cheap or expensive. The expensive side allows your doors to remain steady and glide shut easily whereas the cheaper will have you seeing your door sag and be tougher to pull shut.

The inlay handles are the one part of pocket door hardware that is decorative. You can get them in silver, gold and plastic. The metal pocket door hardware is able to be etched or engraved which is recommended if you want some style.

Sliding door hardware is slightly less hard to get hold of than that of pocket doors. Their located near the back of the house, leading out to the pool or the deck. The sliding door hardware is primarily a sturdy plastic but it doesn’t have to be. It can be replaced with metal of aluminum or you can go high hog and get silver or gold.

Does the sliding door hardware keep the door snug to frame or away from it? Does it hang, suspended or firmly attached? Does the sliding door hardware allow your door to glide softly or squeak in pain when you close it? Choose sliding door hardware based on these thoughts as well as money you wish to spend.

Garage door hardware is often times overlooked, but depending on your style of house it’s one of the first things people see when coming to visit. Besides the usual garage door hardware we have to have such as a motor, metal beams and the sort. They’re useful to shop for when you need your door to close smoothly but the look doesn’t matter as long as it functions.

The exterior garage door hardware, like the sliding door or pocket door is overlooked. Choosing from handles of aluminum, gold or silver or simple twist knobs to turn and pull open the door also in the styled metals.

The real style points come from the exterior door hardware. Choosing from gold or silver, from knobs to push unlocks. The choices are varied and can sometimes be hard to decide on. Besides the regular door hardware you can select to have knockers affixed along with your door knobs for added flare. This door hardware is not only fun but classical. The lion’s head is a popular favorite but your regular etched door hardware as a knocker will work just as well and be eye-catching.
